After a year working as director at a Detroit nonprofit, I decided to transition to a role where I could change health outcomes on a broader scale. I now work at the Michigan Value Collaborative where I work with hospitals across the state of Michigan to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs. Starting in fall of 2019, I will start my Master's of Public Health in Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan.
What makes you a Difference Maker?
Instead of simply recognizing or observing a problem, I always want to do what I can to fix it. I think this is what sets me apart from most; many people will notice an issue or an opportunity but never act on it. If I have the capability to make a change, I will do whatever possible to do so. That is what makes me a difference maker.
Campus Achievements:
I was fortunate enough to come to UM-Dearborn with a full-ride Chancellor's scholarship. I have been on the Dean's List every semester and have earned honors recognition. I conduct research with Dr. Clark-Foos' Human Learning and Creativity. I have done research on topics ranging from stereotype threat to prospective memory. In addition to this, I am active in many organizations on campus. I am the treasurer of Neurology Club, an active member of the Public Health Student Society, and the marketing director of Special Olympics College.
Leadership Experiences:
On campus, I am on the executive board of Neurology Club and Special Olympics College. These positions have helped me develop and hone my leadership skills. Also, I have worked as a University Unions and Events Ambassador for the past year, which has strengthened these skills as well. Off campus, I volunteer frequently with various organizations. One of the greatest leadership experiences I have had was with my internship at Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation. Developing and teaching workshops on healthy living has provided me with invaluable experience in not only the topics I am passionate about, but in leading and supervising, too.
What is your Dream Career?
My ultimate goal is to improve both national and global access to adequate health care for all individuals. I plan to earn my Master's degree and eventually PhD in Public Health. With this under my belt, I would like to continue working in the nonprofit sector. In addition, I want to conduct research on healthcare topics and see where this takes me. Ultimately, I want to improve the quality of and access to healthcare in whatever avenues possible.
What was your Most Defining Moment at UM-Dearborn?
While there was not a specific defining moment for me at UM-Dearborn, there was a time during the middle of my freshman year where everything seemed to click. Between the organizations I was involved in and my job on campus, I felt truly engaged. I realized I was becoming an instrumental part of this community, too. I was making connections with wonderful people on campus who shared similar interests, yet had so many intriguing differences. It was at this point that I realized how lucky I was to be a part of the UM-Dearborn community.
