Caring for her community comes naturally for Ahlam Bokari.
“I believe change starts with individuals,” she said. “Everyone has the potential to make a difference in their community.”
Working to create a healthier community has always been an issue close to Ahlam and the public health program was a perfect fit.
Ahlam spends almost every day in the classroom. Her work with the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) has offered her many opportunities to serve the metro Detroit community. She has taught more than 500 students in Dearborn Public Schools, helping them learn valuable life skills to make healthy choices.
Her most recent initiative has been teaching young people the dangers of smoking. Her advocacy and volunteerism were featured in the Detroit Free Press.
“Ahlam will make a difference in her community because she works hard every day and has a creative mind. Ahlam also wants others to succeed and will find ways to help people do well,” said Patricia Hartshorn, lecturer of biological sciences.
Ahlam has never been one to think inside the box and sees endless opportunities to serve her community and make a positive impact. In the future, she hopes to design a health campaign for youth in Dearborn and to someday manage her own nonprofit organization.
