Benita's Story

Benita Robinson doesn’t take college for granted.

In fact, her road to University of Michigan-Dearborn was an interesting one.

“At one point in my life, I was unsure if I would ever be able to fulfill my dreams of earning a degree,” Benita said.

But her hard work paid off. She enrolled in community college.

Later, she enrolled at UM-Dearborn, a memorable moment for Benita.

“It was a huge accomplishment for me to be at University of Michigan-Dearborn because I overcame many obstacles that could have easily been used as an excuse not to reach my fullest in my life,” she said. “I am proud of the progress I have made over the years and hope that my accomplishments give hope to all nontraditional students out there who have doubts about whether they can succeed in life.”

Benita’s drive and determination earned her the title of “Difference Maker.”

That drive also will benefit Benita in her future endeavors, as she hopes to someday establish a nonprofit organization that strives to teach underprivileged children how to efficiently and effectively utilize technology for everyday tasks.

“Through advocacy and education, I plan to continue on my quest for a better society,” she said.

Benita serves as an example for many students, namely those who are nontraditional, on how to chase their dreams.

“I have known Benita for about two years and her growth, academically, professionally and socially, is to be admired,” said Shareia Carter, program coordinator for the Women’s Resource Center. “Ms. Robinson is a great example of tenacity and courage. Benita’s enthusiasm and dedication captures the essence of student life and she really does make a difference.”
