Christopher's Story

Christopher Watkins doesn’t need a pat on the back, a thank-you note or a monetary reward.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn student simply strives to improve his environment.

“I simply act because action is needed,” Christopher said. “I lead when necessary. I help without question and accept failure as a motivation for success.”

He exhibits those qualities through his involvement in student organizations, like Student Philanthropy Council, Black Student Union and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This year, he’s a “Difference Maker.”

Shortly after meeting Christopher, Amy Karaban grew impressed with his professionalism, drive and intellect.

“Since arriving on campus, he’s taken advantage of every opportunity presented to him and sought out other opportunities on his own, getting involved in leadership programs, joining student organizations and becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,” said Amy, assistant director of student activities.

And like most college students, Christopher understands the financial struggles associated with higher education, so he developed workshops and trainings to aid college students struggling with debt.

Christopher also takes it upon himself to mentor others, including his two brothers.

“He represents the type of student that UM-Dearborn is known for – well-rounded, inquisitive and committed to community – making him an ideal candidate for a ‘Difference Maker’ award,” Amy said.

The information technology management major plans to utilize those qualities in his future endeavors, as he hopes to someday pursue a career in consulting.

“I will be the person called to come in and help improve a company’s current processes and add some new idea to improve its efficiency and possibilities for success,” he said.

Tasha Williams, student affairs program manager, nominated Christopher as a “Difference Maker” because of his growth and maturity over the years.

“I have known Christopher for close to two years, and in that time, he has matured into a well-rounded and respected student, peer and member of the Greek community,” she said.
