Cindy's Story

What makes you a Difference Maker?

I am the first of my family to attend a four-year university. I have dedicated myself to being a successful student and wanted to make an impact in my campus community along the way. I firmly believe that you can learn something from every person. I have met and cultivated many relationships with my peers at the university and always offer a helping hand.

Campus Achievements:

I am a member of SOAR and of the Women in Learning and Leadership (WILL) programs. During my time at the University of Michigan - Dearborn I have joined the Center for the Education of Women (CEW) and CASL Alumni Association, and became a General Merit Scholar.

Leadership Experiences:

I have been inspired by many of my professors and peers to be more involved in my communities. In my campus community I serve as a student mentor for returning students just entering the University through the SOAR program. Being a mentor to these students allowed me to see the impact one person can make on others.

In the community I serve on the board of directors for the Southwest Detroit Lighthouse Charter Academy because I want to contribute to a better educational environment for the children. I also serve on the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation board because I value the contribution of community-based organizations of essential cultural services to my community.

What is your Dream Career?

While being at the University of Michigan - Dearborn I learned that I have the potential to do so much. I want to be an agent of change in my community and I hope to be able to attend graduate school for public health after I graduate. My dream career would be to work with minority populations to address social and health inequalities in some form.

What was your Most Defining Moment at UM-Dearborn?

My most defining moment at UM - Dearborn has been being selected as a Difference Maker! Every year the University recognizes students that I know have put a lot of dedication and effort into not only their education but making an impact on our campus community. I am proud to say that I am now among that group of individuals.
