Darrius's Story

What makes you a Difference Maker?

I believe that I am a Difference Maker because during my time at the university, I stepped out of the box and challenged what wasn't challenged in the past. I went outside of my comfort zone from me being the only person on my campus from my high school in 2016 and joined a few organizations to get to know people and make connections with my colleagues. From doing that, I was able to volunteer more on campus, sit into meetings and represent the student body for things like homecoming, and do all other sorts of cool things while obtaining my degree. The lessons that I learned and taught my peers from being active and involved on campus within my orgs and my chapter went hand-and-hand with what I was learning in the classroom. Making an impact is what I strive to do and believe that I have the capability in doing and I learned that by making a difference in my involvements on campus within student life.

Tell us about your leadership experience.

President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Nu Nu Chapter; President of Student Activities Board; Student Facilitator and Coordinator for Wolverine Leadership Cohort; Diversity Ambassadors; Member of the Student Philanthropy Council; Community Service Leader for World Medical Relief; Co-Owner of L&D Designs and Creations LLC.

What is your dream career or goal?

After undergrad, I wish to go to graduate school at Howard University and study Film Television and Telecommunications. My overall goal is to branch off into the television and film industry in the capacity of post production, videography, cinematography, etc. and enhance the image that Black men have in film and television.

What is your most defining moment?

My most defining moment at UM-Dearborn was me finishing school. After finishing school, I felt this sense of pride that even though it wasn't given to me, I earned my degree and earned my education. I was able to make my family proud and be truthful with myself and say "Even though that was rough, you got through it and nothing can stop you from achieving your dreams if you work hard and don't look back". From there, I believe that there truly is no going back and that the university has prepared me to go out and make my own path.
