Destiny Madkin exemplifies leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to making a lasting impact on the UM-Dearborn campus community. As a student majoring in business administration at the College of Business, she has dedicated herself to a wide range of campus organizations, driving change and inspiring others to do the same.
Empowering Others Through Service
In her role as student organization consultant in the Office of Student Life, Destiny partnered with program coordinator JaNai' James to encourage greater student involvement in community service. One of her key initiatives was the development of a program with UM-Dearborn’s Women in Business group that incentivizes students to volunteer. “Through this collaboration, students can earn a volunteer cord for graduation by completing 50 hours of service, tracked via the UM-Dearborn Volunteer Tracking website,” she said. “This program has not only boosted students’ motivation to engage with the community but has also highlighted the true reward of service — the experience of making a meaningful difference in others’ lives.”
Creating a Cultural Showcase
Also in her role as student organization consultant, Destiny collaborated with over 20 student organizations from different cultures on campus to create a Cultural Showcase, held in March. Among the student organizations was the Office of Student Life, Center for Social Justice and Inclusion, Student Activities Board, and Student Government. "It was an outstanding event, and an opportunity to celebrate the diversity that defines our campus."
Women in Business Student Government Conference
As a fellow of student government, Destiny played a key role in organizing the Women in Business Student Government Conference, a panel discussion with professional women offering insights into navigating the workforce. "The event provided invaluable advice to UM-Dearborn’s current and future professionals on how to enter the workforce and build successful careers," said Destiny, who has served as president of Women in Business since fall 2023.
Importance of Mentorship
Reflecting on her own academic and career journey, Destiny credits her mentors as essential to her success. Originally a psychology major, she made a pivotal transition to business administration in 2021. “I was uncertain about my career path at the time, and I wasn’t sure where to start,” she said.
Seeking direction, Destiny reached out to her advisor, Rita Aguis, MA, senior internship program manager at the Business Career Center. “Rita helped me navigate the transfer process and guided me through the steps to kick-start my career,” she said. “She even taught me how to create my first resume from scratch, and thanks to her guidance, I’ve received callbacks for most of the positions I’ve applied for.”
Leading the Black Student Union
Fall 2023 was a busy time for Destiny. Not only was she president of the Black Student Union, she also led the creation of UM-Dearborn’s first-ever homecoming pep rally for the women’s hockey team. “I wanted to foster a sense of unity and school spirit,” she said. “The event featured performances by the Black Student Union and other cultural organizations, games, and appearances by key campus figures, including deans, advisors, and even Bruce the Goose, Dearborn’s mascot.”
Honoring Veterans
Destiny has also been involved in projects honoring military veterans. In 2024, she helped design a banner for the Veterans Association Office, drawing inspiration from her own family’s deep military connections. “My grandfather, great uncle, and uncle all served in Vietnam, and hearing their stories instilled in me a profound respect for those who have served,” she said. “This project allowed us to recognize and honor veterans and active service members, making them feel truly welcome in our community.”
Faith and Personal Growth
Destiny is an active member of the Christian Community Group at UM-Dearborn. “Being a part of this group has been very rewarding,” she said. “It has helped me keep my faith as a top priority throughout my academic journey.”
Future Aspirations
Looking to the future, Destiny is determined to pursue a career as a data analyst at a leading company such as GM, Ford, or Delta Airlines. “My coursework in information systems management and business administration has equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in these industries,” she said. Destiny also carries with her a strong entrepreneurial spirit and dreams of creating and owning her own business one day.
