Fareed's Story

Education is central to Fareed Shalhout.

“My passion for higher education and student affairs comes from my experience working in the Office of Admissions and Orientation for four years as an Mpressions Member and Placement Exam Proctor,” he said.

As a student, Fareed in actively engaged in numerous student organizations on campus including serving as the vice president of Student Government, former president of Students United for Peace and Justice, former director of clubs and organizations as well as former chair of Student Organization Advisory Council.

“I have made it a point throughout my undergraduate career to take advantage of the opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much,” he said.

Fareed credits the Opportunity Scholarship for helping him complete his degree in health policy studies at University of Michigan-Dearborn, as well as his parents for their continued support.

“During my graduate school process, my parents were the ones that I went to for advice and guidance,” he said. “I am forever indebted to them for instilling that education is important to become successful and for inspiring me to be the best I can be.”

Fareed plans to continue his passion for higher education and will work toward his master’s degree in higher education and student affairs at Western Michigan University.

“Fareed’s passion for collegiate life is apparent by his decision and acceptance at Western Michigan University in the student affairs program,” said Jonathan Larson, coordinator for LGBTQ initiatives and inclusion. “It is so rewarding to see Fareed’s path at UM-Dearborn influence his career aspirations.”
