Flavia's Story

What makes you a Difference Maker?

What makes me a Difference Maker is my dedication and commitment to motivate others to achieve their dreams and my eagerness to take on challenging tasks. During my time at UM-Dearborn, I have always strived to help others turn their intentions into actions. No matter if it was school related work, helping organize events, or seeking personal advice. Being able to put other students’ needs in front of my own has always been a priority in my life. I have learned that anyone can talk about making a change but only a few truly commit. Thus, I always tried to show others that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve any goal they want even though it might seem difficult at the beginning.

Campus Achievements:

In the past four years, I’ve had several achievements at UM-Dearborn. I received the William J. Branstorm Freshman Prize, the James B Angell Scholar and achieved the Dean’s list every semester since I started at UM-Dearborn in September 2012. I was also named the Honor Scholar for the Finance program at the College of Business. In addition, I’m very involved with student organizations. I’m part of Beta Gamma Sigma which is an honor fraternity and I’m on the executive board of the American Marketing Association (AMA) and Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi) which is a business professional fraternity. During my first year on the executive board of the AMA, I was the VP of Fundraising and organized several events to help raise money for the organization. Currently, I’m serving as the VP of Finance and manage the AMA’s bank account. I was also a founding member of AKPsi and I currently serve as the Historian. Moreover, I worked as a Research Assistant for the College of Business where I was able to create and analyze surveys and support academic publications.

Leadership Experiences:

During my time at UM-Dearborn, I had different leadership experiences on and off campus. While serving on the executive board of the American Marketing Association (AMA) and Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi), I was able to be the leader of several projects. I organized several fundraising and professional events as well as planned and held a marketing workshop for high school students at the Detroit Food Academy. Being in leadership positions, improved my communication and team work skills and taught me how to work efficiently with a large group of people. During my internship at Ford Motor Company, I was in charge of a project that created a process to improve the reporting of vehicle inventory. I had to hold meetings and coordinate with different departments to receive the necessary information to complete the project. Due to my leadership experience from student organization, I was able to successfully lead and complete the project I was assigned to.

What is your Dream Career?

My dream career is to be able to use my financial and analytic knowledge to improve the financial stability of young adults. Being a college student, I understand how confusing it can be to manage loans, savings, or retirement plans, etc. I would enjoy working and advising young college students on how to handle their financials when going to college. I want to help them have financial stability during and after they attend college while avoiding extensive debt. Besides achieving my dream career, I also hope to fulfill my long term life goal of travelling to different parts of the world to explore new countries and cultures. My two top destinations are Australia and New Zealand and I hope to go there soon to make my dream come true.

What was a Defining Moment at UM-Dearborn?

It’s hard for me to think of a most defining moment when I had so many great experiences at UM-Dearborn. However, I would say the most defining moment was when I joined student organizations my freshman year. It was a great decision because it made my whole college experience so much better. Not only was I able to make new friends but I was also able to be involved in planning professional events and participating in community service events. One of my favorite events was when I held a marketing workshop for high school students at the Detroit Food Academy (DFA). DFA is a program for teenagers and young adults that teaches them important entrepreneurship skills. The marketing workshop that I held taught students the basics of marketing principals that I learned from my professors at UM-Dearborn. The reason why it was one of my favorite is because I really enjoyed working with students and knowing that I taught them something that will help them in their future career. During this workshop, I realized that I will want to continue working with young adults in the future and help them become better future leaders.
