Kelsey's Story

What makes you a Difference Maker?

Throughout my time at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, I’ve always strived to be the best I could be while making a positive impact and took advantage of every opportunity that was put in front of me. These opportunities, even if they did take me out of my comfort zone allowed me to make a difference in both myself and with my fellow classmates. I’ve learned the quote by Helen Keller, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much," is true. I’ve been able to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty both inside and out the classroom. From group projects, to facilitating meetings and professional development for students, I hope that I have been able to make a difference to those who I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working alongside with.

Tell us about your leadership experience.

On campus I am the Student Advisor for the National Society for Leadership and Success UM-Dearborn’s chapter. In this role, I guide inductees through the Induction process and insure they are able to complete all the necessary steps. I am also the Lead Student Assistant and Lead Student Advisor for my on-campus positions at Career Services and Talent Gateway. In these positions I coach and lead team meetings, events, and projects. Off campus, I am apart of community of volunteer puppy raisers for Leader Dogs for the Blind. As a puppy raiser, I have coordinated a variety of fundraisers for the non-profit. I also arrange puppy raiser outings that help our puppies get the exposure to a variety of environments which is important to their training.

What is your dream career or goal?

I’m a history major so I am passionate about learning how we can better understand the past and connect it to our future. My dream career would be to work at a European history museum as a Museum Curator or as an Archivist. In these roles, my hope is to continue research of those who became before me and understand how their lives and past events can be conveyed to the public. We can learn a lot through history but being able to convey the events and importance isn’t always the easiest. I would love to be able to establish and curate exhibits in which those who may not have the privilege and access to museums can still learn about the past.

What is your most defining moment?

My most defining moment at UM-Dearborn, was taking a Polish History course in the Winter of 2019. I had recently applied to study aboard to Poland and thought I should learn more about the country before visiting for two months. In this course I found my passion in exploring archives and doing research, it also exposed me to the UM-Dearborn's History program. I had always been interested in history, but I never thought it could be a career. But after this course, I couldn’t stop taking history classes (I haven’t taken a history class that I haven’t liked) and made the switch. I now have an internship at the Ukrainian American Museum and Archives, and I am currently in the process of researching post grad opportunities. All because I took this one course, I have found what I truly enjoy and want to do as a career.
