Mykayla's Story

What makes you a Difference Maker?

What makes me a Difference Maker is my passion for equity and inclusion both on and off of campus. If I see something that is unfair or disheartening, I will speak out about it and try my hardest to come up with a solution to the issue at hand. I can not sit on the sidelines waiting for others to take the lead on an important issue. Especially when it is in my power to do something about it. So when I saw the need for changes at our school in regards to the black student experience I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

Tell us about your leadership experience.

I am the on-campus president and social action chair for my chapter Delta Psi of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. I am also the vice-president of the Black Student Union.

What is your dream career or goal?

A lifelong goal I plan to achieve is to own a series of restaurants throughout the United States. I have always had a love for cooking, which is why I started my business, Dulces de Kayla this previous year. The culinary arts industry is male-dominated and young girls often see that as a threat, so I would like to be a role model for them and show them that we are just as, if not more, talented.

What is your most defining moment?

My most defining moment at the University of Michigan-Dearborn would be when my fellow executive board members of the Black Student Union and I met with Chancellor Grasso and Dean of Students Amy Finely, to discuss the initiatives that we would like to see on campus. This was a defining moment because for a long time the black community on campus felt as though we did not have a voice, so for us to be able to represent and voice the concerns of many students was a great feeling.
