Janet's Story
See the Difference I've Made

Currently working in Human Resources in the advertising industry where I work with my team members and leadership to develop trainings and events that encourage our employees to be more civically engaged, to be a partner to our clients in viewing our work through a multicultural lens and ensuring many backgrounds are considered when plans are developed. My colleagues and I work to improve the workplace by providing an enriching environment where employees feel empowered, recognized, and have the confidence to learn and lead. Actively engaged in supporting UM-Dearborn through the GOLD Alumni board and its various activities including helping to host Giving Brew Day, participating in commencement, and open house events.

“The titles and awards aren't the definition of your experiences, it is how you grow within them and impact the community that truly matters.”

This is the motto that Janet Browne lives by.

From serving on the board of directors for the Student Associaton of Michigan to serving as a senator and subcommittee chair for Student Government, she has a lot on her plate. But, she sees each area of involvement as an opportunity to promote diversity and inclusion, fostering community on campus.

A visible ally, Janet was a co-founder of PRIDE and earned the Commitment to Inclusion award in 2014 for her involvement in LGBTQIA activism.

“I think that experiences both in and out of the classroom are what shape us as students and leaders in the community,” she said.

A transfer student from Grand Valley State University, she said she found a passion for service on this campus.

After holding three different positions within her sorority, Janet decided to branch out. She now serves as president of the Panhellenic Council and was selected out of 275 applicants to represent the university and its Greek Life at the the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference this past year

“She is known for her unfaltering values and her demonstrated commitment to advancing inclusion on our campus,” said Kristin McDonough, Greek Life coordinator. “Janet has, without question, as both an ally and leader, been a driving force in making UM-Dearborn a safe, welcoming and inviting campus for all people.”

She plans to carry her commitment to inclusion into her career in human resources, striving to create inclusive communities within the workplace.
