What makes you a Difference Maker?
Our SHRM student organization has held a special place in my heart. It was the first organization I joined after transferring to UM-Dearborn in Winter of 2019. I am a Difference Maker because I have lead the group and persisted in leading the group through this virtual space. It was important to me to continue to grow the organization after all it has given me. We have built a space that allows HR and non-HR students to feel comfortable in exploring their careers. We have an internal group of current students and alumni that stay in contact and I am a large part in making that happen.
Tell us about your leadership experience.
I have been the vice president of the Society for Human Resource Management for 4 semesters. I created the agenda for our weekly and bi- weekly meetings. This involved reaching out to connections and inviting them to be a guest speaker, collaborating with other members for input, scheduling workshops for resume, linkedIn or interview tips. I also represented SHRM at COB leadership meetings, on social media and when we were in person. I gave presentations in person to students about the organization and mentored them in anyway. Off campus I worked to develop my professional skills by obtaining 3 internships . I was able to grow confidence and develop my skills in the real world. This helped me grow into the professional I am now. I also take pride in how developed my LinkedIn profile is. I have attended numerous sessions on how to enhance your profile and I feel that I am a leader of UM-Dearborn just by having professional and active profile out there.
What is your dream career or goal?
I've always loved networking, growing connections, interfacing with others and guiding those to success. I am a current recruitment intern with ZF Group, and I will transition into a Staffing Specialist role post graduation. My goal would be to end up in a university relations, student development or talent development position. This could be with a non-profit in higher education or with a organization like ZF. I hope to use the skills I've learned about professional development and guide others in their careers.
What is your most defining moment?
My most defining moment at UM-Dearborn would be the beginning of this Winter 2021 semester. I have an easy load for classes and I could've easily given up on coursework and SHRM while being in this virtual space and almost done in my college career. Other leaders in my group fell for this, and I was responsible for leading the organization as a whole. I met with our faculty advisor numerous times for succession planning. I wanted to ensure that after I am gone, the group still has room to grown and flourish.
