What makes you a Difference Maker?
I believe that I’m a Difference Maker because I’m always looking for ways to help out. One of the things that I love to do is interact with incoming students. I feel that even something small, like asking a student what they’re going to major in, is opening the door and making the university sound as inviting as it really is. I also really enjoy participating in different services. I’ve gone on Alternative Spring Break two years in a row because I really enjoy seeing the impact I can make by volunteering.
Highlight your campus achievements:
In April 2015, I was awarded Most Improved Student by the Black Student Union for growing participation and commitment to the organization.
During the 2015 Student Leadership awards, I received the Emerging Leader Award for increased organizational teamwork and effectiveness while gaining leadership. I also received the Service Learning certificate.
Highlight your leadership experiences both on and off campus:
Participated in two different panels as well as answered student college-related questions during the Victor's Selection for the Opportunity Scholarship.
I’m currently the chair of the academic/professional development committee for the leadership advisory board for the Opportunity Scholarship.
In 2015, I was one of the student representatives for the Black Student Union.
What is your dream career and/or long term life goal?
My dream job would be to work for a nonprofit after I graduate. After going on Alternative Spring Break two years in a row, I’ve learned what nonprofits do to help out their communities; I realized that it’s something I want to get involved with. The people who work there are very passionate about their communities and what it is their organizations are doing to improve the conditions in their area; I really want to work in a field where I can give back to the community. Also, I've always wanted to own my own bridal shop since I was a child, so hopefully I can make that a reality some time down the road.
What was your most defining moment at UM-Dearborn?
I believe that I had a few defining moments, but one moment that I don't talk about much was when I was nominated to join the Student Philanthropy Council. I didn't really know what the organization was about or even know that they existed. The fact that someone actually thought of me to join a group that is passionate about giving back and educating people about the joys of giving back to their community and university was shocking to me at the time. Now that I have been in the organization for almost two years, I’ve realized how much I really enjoy helping out and giving back.
