Lauren's Story

Lauren Lockhart doesn’t believe in impossible. And, she isn’t afraid to advocate change.

Through her participation in student organizations, and her academic and volunteer experiences, Lauren applies what she learns and uses it to help eliminate social injustice and inequalities.

Joining Women in Learning and Leadership (WILL) only helped motivate her to be more active on campus.

“The organization challenged me to be my best, helped me excel academically and boosted my confidence level,” she said.

Lauren has become a leader.

She is now the co-campus event coordinator for the student organization. She organized their Take Back the Night event in October, drawing in more than 150 participants and raising awareness for sexual and domestic violence.

Lauren co-founded Voice for Choice and is also the social media coordinator for the American Association of University Women Student Organization. She volunteers her time to organizations including Vista Maria and the Mercy Education Center.

And, the list goes on.

Somehow, she finds time to work as student assistant for the circulation department, where Jonathan Scherger, assistant librarian, has watched Lauren’s natural leadership and interpersonal skills flourish.

“Lauren is very patient and very thorough with new student assistants,” said Scherger. “She understands how to make the peer-to-peer relationship work.”

Now Lauren is ready for her next chapter to begin, and it starts with earning her Master’s degree in social work. She hopes to work for a nonprofit organization and continue to advocate for change.

“My long term goal is to be a voice for the voiceless in the struggle concerning inequality and social injustice.”
