Difference Makers
UM-Dearborn Difference Makers are at the forefront of their fields. They’re improving the lives of others and making an impact on campus and in our local communities.
Mariam Mustafa never stops working for the improvement and good of the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus.
She is involved in Student Government, serving as the public relations committee chair, and is the editor-in-chief for the campus literary and fine arts journal Lyceum.
“My most defining moment at UM-Dearborn was the day the Fall 2013 journals came in the Lyceum office,” she said. “Being able to have a physical copy of a platform for student voices really validated how I felt as an integral part of this campus.”
As a student, Mariam excels, holding a 3.59 cumulative GPA. She is in the Honors Program and is working on an independent research project.
“Mariam is passionate about learning and loves to challenge herself to learn more and do more,” said Maureen Sytsma, secretary to the dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, “especially if she feels that she can make a difference and make positive changes to her community and for her peers.”
Inclusion is important to Mariam; she is looking to curriculum reform to improve students’ overall learning experience.
“Ultimately, my career plans involve reforming the general distribution curriculum on a national level for college campuses,” she said.
