Global citizenship is important to Mohamad “Moejay” Jaafar. Focused on that, he chooses campus opportunities where he feels he’s contributing to the world in a real way.
Motivated by giving people the right to freedom of expression, Jaafar joined Amnesty International to expand his knowledge on what's happening around the world politically, socially and culturally.
Jaafar, who served as the Amnesty International campus vice president, has worked to address human rights violations, hosting the AmnesTEA event and collecting more than 100 letters requesting the release of prisoners of conscience all over the world.
He’s working with international students as a way to learn how to be trilingual — he wants to speak Arabic, English and French fluently — so he can communicate with more people in a more dynamic, personal way. He also participated in M²Gate, a U-M social entrepreneurship initiative that allowed him to virtually collaborate with students in Morocco to address the issue of students in Morocco not having access to academically enriching and extracurricular activities. His team's proposal was a website to connect students to these type of opportunities.
The 2018 Summer Intern of the Year winner worked in digital communications at a global communications marketing firm and as an associate producer intern on a Detroit-based radio morning show. His dream career is to work in communications for an organization whose values align with his.
