Patrick's Story

In awe.

That’s how Patrick Simpson-Mahan describes his fascination with the processes of the brain and its control of human behavior. The recent University of Michigan-Dearborn graduate plans to channel that fascination into a career in neurology or psychiatry.

Whatever path he chooses, Patrick will place a priority on being an active member of the community.  A passionate advocate for diversity issues, Patrick is a leader and a volunteer throughout campus.

One issue near to Patrick’s heart is instilling in youth the importance of gaining an education and planning for the future. He has volunteered for Gaining Early Awareness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), where he served as a mentor and role model.

“This program allowed me the opportunity to help share the resources offered on campus with middle and high school students who have to share a limited amount of resources at their home schools in Detroit and other areas,” he said.

“What I enjoy the most about this program is that most of the students come from backgrounds similar to my own, so I can relate to many of their struggles.”

In addition to his involvement in community organizations, Patrick has been co-host and co-producer of WUMD College Radio and a member of Black Student Union, Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and Voices of Triumph Gospel Choir.

Surveying his list of accomplishments in the classroom and throughout the community one word again comes to mind: awe.

“When I think of Patrick, I think of an incredibly dedicated and powerful scholar, committed to serving his community,” said Amy Karaban, assistant director of student activities. “I can’t wait to see what amazing things Patrick accomplishes in the future, as I know how incredibly bright, talented and full of potential he is.”
