There’s an air of intentionality in everything Sherra Bennett does.

Leadership training, service projects, study abroad—each box Sherra checks off circles back to her ultimate goal to make a difference.

“I believe that I have a responsibility to serve my community, both locally and globally,” she said. “I am committed to serving as an advocate for the underserved and promoting positive social change.”

Her advocacy efforts are found throughout her work at University of Michigan-Dearborn.

As a member of the Blueprints Leadership Program, Sherra created S.T.A.R.R. Youth Movement, which focuses on youth leadership development, local civic service engagement and international humanitarian projects.

And she’s been a site leader for both the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service and an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip to Chicago.

Her commitment to serving others also is reflected in the work she does in the Office of International Affairs. There, she works with international students as a language and communication partner, helping them acclimate to campus and the community. 

Sherra understands first-hand what it feels like to be a student in a foreign land because of the time she studied abroad in Italy. She uses that experience to connect with the students she serves.

She’s also connecting with another important group on campus: other female students. Sherra is passionate about helping women succeed. She has worked with the Women’s Resource Center, joined the American Association of University Women and been a cast member in The Vagina Monologues.
 
“When you hear about all of the activities and programs Sherra is involved in you quickly come to realize she is an exceptional young woman,” said Lisa Martin, assistant professor of women’s and gender studies & health policy studies. “Not only does she challenge herself and fellow students in thoughtful class discussions, but she devotes her time outside of class to giving back to the community. 

“She doesn’t spend her time thinking about how she might one day change the world. She is already doing that work.”
