Tyler's Story

After a week of mentoring high school juniors on the basic principles of entrepreneurship, Tyler Whitsett learned the joys of making a difference: one of his students had decided to push himself to get into college so that he could study business.

“At that very moment, I was overwhelmed with emotion,” he said. “I truly want to make a difference in the lives of others and inspire them to push beyond their limitations to be the best they can be.”

Tyler certainly has pushed himself during his time at UM-Dearborn. Whether working with a variety of nonprofit organizations that focus on youth programs or consulting with an international textile manufacturer, he has proven himself as a savvy businessman with a desire to make a difference in his community.

In 2011 he flew to Italy to participate in the Weave the Future program. The program, hosted by Italian textile manufacturer Marzotto Group, brought together 25 junior consultants from around the world to develop strategies for the company.

Even among this elite group, Tyler stood out and was asked to remain with the program, providing consultations on an as-needed basis.

“Tyler is building a reputation in school, with employers and with members of the nonprofit community, as someone who knows how to leverage resources and get the job done,” said Mike Callahan, director of the College of Business’ internship program.

With a career goal of operating a consulting firm that specializes in small businesses and startups, Tyler keeps focused on his ultimate goal.

“I want to utilize every opportunity to give back to my community,” he said, “by positioning the next generation of leaders for greatness.”
