Wedad's Story

Wedad Ibrahim exemplifies leadership at University of Michigan-Dearborn.

She not only serves as the voice of the student body as Student Government president, but also is co-president of the Political Science Association and is an external liaison for the American Red Cross, UM-Dearborn chapter.

It’s no surprise that Wedad is just as successful in the classroom. As a University Honors student, she has earned a spot on the Dean’s List every semester and has an overall GPA of 3.7.

Off campus, she has served as a city organizer for the successful campaign of current State Rep. David Knezek, has served as a summer intern within State Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s neighborhood service center in Detroit and is currently serving as the field coordinator for the ongoing campaign of David Knezek for State Senate.

“I have characterized these past four years around a servitude mentality and have taken advantage of every opportunity my way,” she said.

Her commitment to the community won’t stop here, though. Her dream is to be an attorney and to serve southeast Michigan’s immigrant community.

“As a first-generation college student and Arab American, I want to create a career out of aiding racial minorities, like myself, by providing legal services and support for families,” Wedad said.

Her long-term goal of serving her community also involves eventually running for office.

“The hallmark of a true leader, I think, is an unfaltering commitment and support of their followers,” said Amy Karaban Finley, assistant director for CIViC engagement, “Wedad exemplifies that–and as such is most deserving of the Difference Maker award.”
